With classes well underway, now is the perfect time to book a mini vacation that’s both fun and educational for the whole family. Bundle up for the weather and check out some of these places:

See history in Atlantic Canada. Our eastern provinces boast breathtaking ocean views, national historic sites and the friendliest people ever. Check out a recreated Viking encampment in Newfoundland, the site of confederation in Prince Edward Island and forts and fortresses in Nova Scotia.

Practice French in Montreal. Knowing more than one language is a great skill in today’s globalized world, and French is especially useful here. With its European charm, year-round events and exhibitions, and delicious cuisine, Montreal is an ideal place for the whole family to get more comfortable with French.

Explore nature in Calgary. Set dramatically between prairies and mountain peaks, Calgary is the perfect base for discovering the natural wonders of Alberta. A daytrip in any direction can take you to the Rocky Mountains, Canadian Badlands or national parks. For a quick parental indulgence, the Kananaskis Nordic Spa is only 45 minutes away and has access to a network of trails to hike, snowshoe or ski.

Check out museums in Toronto. This vibrant and diverse city is filled with museums and attractions for any interest – hockey, dinosaurs, science, art, shoes, animals, marine life and more. Kids and parents alike will also love the various festivals and markets that take place throughout the year.

Learn politics in Ottawa. If your children are studying social sciences or Canadian history, this is a great spot to visit. Informative, easy-to-follow guided tours of parliament are free and teach visitors about how our government works. Lots of museums and exciting dining in ByWard Market round out the trip.

Save and keep your budget under control by looking for hospitality chains which have family-friendly options with kitchen suites that allow you to cook some (healthier) meals, offered by hotels like Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites by Marriott.
